At-Tariq Verse 17

So bear with the disbelievers ˹O Prophet˺. Let them be for ˹just˺ a little while.

So bear with the disbelievers, and respite them for a while.

So respite the unbelievers; delay with them awhile.

[Prophet], let the disbelievers be, let them be for a while.

So respite thou the infidels - respite them gently,

Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers; Give respite to them gently (for awhile).

So leave the unbelievers to themselves; respite them awhile.

So bear with unbelievers with patience, and give them respite for a while.

Therefore give them some respite – give them some time.

So respite the faithless; give them a gentle respite.

So let the unbelievers remain at will; let them continue to remain at will for a little while.

Therefore grant the disbelievers respite, yes grant them respite for a little while.

So delay/give time (to) the disbelievers, delay them/give them time slowly/gently.

Therefore give them some respite - give them some time.

So give respite to the unbelievers; deal you gently with them for a while.

So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal you gently with them for a while.

Glorify the name of thy Lord, the Most High!

So grant the unbelievers a respite: let them alone for a while.

So give a respite to the disbelievers. Deal thou gently with them for a while.

Give respite to the disbelievers and leave them alone for a while.

Therefore respite the unbelievers, and delay them for a while.

So, give a respite to the disbelievers; deal gently with them for a while.

so bear with those who deny the truth, and let them be for a little while.

Therefore, give the blasphemers respite, a brief respite.

So respite, O Muhammad (s), the disbelievers; grant them respite ([reiterated as] an emphasis, one enhanced by the use of a different form [mahhil, amhil]), that is to say, put them off, for a little (ruwayd is a verbal noun emphasising the import of the operator, and is the diminutive form of rd or irwad, with shortening of final consonant [ruwaydan, ruwayd]). Surely enough God, exalted be He, seized them at Badr and abrogated [the dispensation of] `granting respite' by the `sword' verse, in other words, by the command to fight and struggle. Meccan, consisting of 19 verses.

فَمَهِّلِ الْكَافِرِينَ


So, give a respite to the disbelievers;

meaning, wait for them and do not be in haste concerning them.

أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْدًا



deal gently with them for a while.

meaning, a little while.

This means that you will see what befalls them of torment, punishment and destruction.

This is as Allah says,

نُمَتِّعُهُمْ قَلِيلً ثُمَّ نَضْطَرُّهُمْ إِلَى عَذَابٍ غَلِيظٍ

We let them enjoy for a little while, then in the end We shall oblige them to (enter) a great torment. (31;24)
