At-Tur Verse 47

Also, the wrongdoers will certainly have another torment before that ˹Day˺, but most of them do not know.[[ i.e., famine, droughts, or the defeat at the Battle of Badr (see {32:21}). The Battle of Badr took place in the 15th year of the Prophet’s mission. The previous passage poses fifteen questions to the Meccan pagans before warning them in this passage.]]

And for the wrongdoers, there will be another punishment before that, but most of them do not know.

And there surely awaits the evildoers a chastisement beyond even that, but most of them know it not.

Another punishment awaits the evildoers, though most of them do not realize it.

And verily for those who do wrong there is a torment before that; but most of them know not.

And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment besides this; But most of them understand not.

Surely a chastisement awaits the wrong-doers even before the coming of that Day; but most of them do not know.

Surely there are other torments besides this for those who are wicked, though most of them do not know.

And indeed for the unjust is another punishment before this, but most of them do not know. (Punishment in the grave is proven by this verse.)

Indeed there is a punishment besides that for those who do wrong, but most of them do not know.

And surely for those who commit the greatest wrong (through unbelief or associating partners with God and resisting the conveying of His Religion), there is another punishment besides that, but most of them do not know.

There awaits the wrongdoers yet another punishment even prior to that (punishment of war). But most of them do not know.

And that truly to those who were unjust/oppressive (is) a torture other than that, and but most of them do not know.

And indeed for the unjust is another punishment before this, but most of them do not know. (Punishment in the grave is proven by this verse.)

And surely those who are unjust shall have a punishment besides that (in the world), but most of them understand not.

And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment (i.e. the torment in this world and in their graves) before this, but most of them know not. [Tafsir At-Tabari, Vol. 27, Page 36].

The day when their struggle will avail them naught, nor will they be helped.

And surely those who are unjust shall have a punishment besides that (in the world), but most of them do not know.

And verily, for those who do wrong, there is a punishment beyond that. But most of them know not.

The unjust will suffer other torments besides this but most of them do not know.

For the harmdoers there is indeed, a punishment before that, but most of them do not know.

And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment before this; but most of them know not.

Truly, for those who do wrong there is a punishment besides that, though most of them do not know it.

For those who do wrong, there is a punishment besides that; but most of them do not know.

And assuredly for those who do wrong, by their [persistence in] disbelief, there is a chastisement beyond that, in this world, before their death -- thus they were punished with famine and drought for seven years, and with being killed on the day of Badr; but most of them do not know, that the chastisement will befall them.

وَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا عَذَابًا دُونَ ذَلِكَ

And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment before this;

meaning, that of being the torment in this world. Allah the Exalted said in another Ayah,

وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُمْ مِّنَ الْعَذَابِ الاٌّدْنَى دُونَ الْعَذَابِ الاٌّكْبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ


And verily, We will make them taste of the near torment prior to the supreme torment (in the Hereafter), in order that they may return. (32;21)

Allah said;

وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ



but most of them know not.

meaning, `We will torment them in the life of the world and test them with various hardships, so that they might go back and repent. However, they do not understand what is happening to them or why, because when the torment is removed, they revert to committing the worst of what they used to do before.'
Ordering the Prophet to have Patience and to glorify Allah

Allah the Exalted said
