Adh-Dhariyat Verse 29

Then his wife came forward with a cry, clasping her forehead ˹in astonishment˺, exclaiming, “˹A baby from˺ a barren, old woman!”

His wife cried out loud, and struck her face [in astonishment] and said, “[I am] a barren old woman!”

Then came forward his wife, clamouring, and she smote her face, and said, 'An old woman, barren!'

His wife then entered with a loud cry, struck her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman?’

Then his wife drew near vociferating, and smote her face, and said: an old barren woman!

But his wife came forward (laughing) aloud; she smote her forehead and said; "A barren old woman!"

So hearing his wife went forth shouting. She struck her face and exclaimed: “A barren old woman am I.”

His wife came out lamenting, striking her forehead, and said: "I, am old and barren woman?"

So his wife came screaming, and striking her forehead cried, “What! For a barren old woman?”

Then his wife came forward crying [with joy]. She beat her face, and said, ‘A barren old woman!’

Then his wife came forward, groaning, and struck her forehead, saying: "How shall I bear a child, (being) a barren old woman?"

Then his wife came to him extremely embarrassed. She smote her forehead and said, `(I am but) an old woman then barren, how (can I ever be able to give birth to a child?)

So his woman (wife) approached/came in an outcry/frown, so she hit/struck (an act of surprise) her face/front and she said: "Old/weak, infertile."

So his wife came screaming, and striking her forehead cried, “What! For a barren old woman?”

Then his wife came up in great grief, and she struck her face and said, "An old barren woman!"

Then his wife came forward with a loud voice, she smote her face, and said: "A barren old woman!"

So he conceived a fear of them. They said: Fear not. And they gave him the good news of a boy possessing knowledge.

Then his wife came up in great grief, and she struck her face and said: An old barren woman!

Then his wife came forward, making moan, and smote her face, and cried: A barren old woman!

His wife came forward, crying and beating her face, saying, "I am an old barren woman!"

(Sarah) his wife came with an exclamation and clasped her face, and said: 'Surely, I am a barren old woman'

Then his wife came forward with a loud voice; she smote her face, and said: "A barren old woman!"

Then his wife came forward, crying and beating her brow. She said, "I am surely a barren, old woman."

His wife came forward crying. She clasped her face, and said, “A barren old woman?”

Then his wife, Sarah, came forward clamouring, shouting (f sarratin is a circumstantial qualifier, that is to say, she came shouting) and smote, slapped, her face, and said, `A barren old woman!', who has never given birth to a child, aged ninety-nine, with Abraham being one hundred years old; or [alternatively] he was a hundred and twenty years old and she was ninety years old.

فَأَقْبَلَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ فِي صَرَّةٍ

Then his wife came forward with a loud voice,

She screamed loudly, according to Ibn Abbas, Mujahid, Ikrimah, Abu Salih, Ad-Dahhak, Zayd bin Aslam, Ath-Thawri and As-Suddi. She said when she shouted,
يوَيْلَتَا
Ah! Woe to me! (25;28), then,

فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا

she smote her face,

meaning, she struck herself upon her forehead, according to Mujahid and Ibn Sabit.

Ibn Abbas said,

"she smacked her face just as women do when confronted with an amazing thing,"

وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌ



and said;"A barren old woman!"

meaning, "How can I give birth while I am an old woman And even when I was young I was barren and could not have children,"

قَالُوا كَذَلِكَ قَالَ رَبُّكِ

إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْحَكِيمُ الْعَلِيمُ
