فَبَعَثَ
Then (was) sent
ٱللَّهُ
(by) Allah
غُرَابًا
a crow
يَبْحَثُ
it (was) scratching
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
لِيُرِيَهُۥ
to show him
كَيْفَ
how
يُوَٰرِى
to hide
سَوْءَةَ
(the) dead body
أَخِيهِۚ
(of) his brother
قَالَ
He said
يَٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ
"Woe to me!
أَعَجَزْتُ
Am I unable
أَنْ
that
أَكُونَ
I can be
مِثْلَ
like
هَٰذَا
this
ٱلْغُرَابِ
[the] crow
فَأُوَٰرِىَ
and hide
سَوْءَةَ
(the) dead body
أَخِىۖ
(of) my brother?"
فَأَصْبَحَ
Then he became
مِنَ
of
ٱلنَّٰدِمِينَ
the regretful

Faba'asal laahu ghuraabai yabhasu fil ardi liyuriyahoo kaifa yuwaaree sawata akheeh; qaala yaa wailataaa a'ajaztu an akoona misla haazal ghuraabi fa uwaariya saw ata akhee fa asbaha minan naadimeen

Then Allah sent a crow searching [i.e., scratching] in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said, "O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the disgrace [i.e., body] of my brother?" And he became of the regretful.

Tafsir

مِنْ
From
أَجْلِ
time
ذَٰلِكَ
that
كَتَبْنَا
We ordained
عَلَىٰ
on
بَنِىٓ
(the) Children
إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ
(of) Israel
أَنَّهُۥ
that he
مَن
who
قَتَلَ
kills
نَفْسًۢا
a person
بِغَيْرِ
other than
نَفْسٍ
(for) a life
أَوْ
or
فَسَادٍ
(for) spreading corruption
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
فَكَأَنَّمَا
then (it) is as if
قَتَلَ
he has killed
ٱلنَّاسَ
mankind
جَمِيعًا
all
وَمَنْ
and whoever
أَحْيَاهَا
saves it
فَكَأَنَّمَآ
then (it) is as if
أَحْيَا
he has saved
ٱلنَّاسَ
mankind
جَمِيعًاۚ
all
وَلَقَدْ
And surely
جَآءَتْهُمْ
came to them
رُسُلُنَا
Our Messengers
بِٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ
with clear Signs
ثُمَّ
yet
إِنَّ
indeed
كَثِيرًا
many
مِّنْهُم
of them
بَعْدَ
after
ذَٰلِكَ
that
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
لَمُسْرِفُونَ
(are) surely those who commit excesses

min ajli zaalika katabnaa 'alaa Banee Israaa'eela annahoo man qatala nnafsam bighairi nafsin aw fasaadin fil ardi faka annnamaa qatalan fil ardi faka annammaa qatalan naasa jamee'anw wa man ahyaahaa faka annamaaa ahyan naasa jamee'aa; wa laqad jaaa'at hum Rusulunaa bilbaiyinaati summa inna kaseeram minhum ba'da zaalika fil ardi lamusrifoon

Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And Our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.

Tafsir

إِنَّمَا
Only
جَزَٰٓؤُا۟
(the) recompense
ٱلَّذِينَ
(for) those who
يُحَارِبُونَ
wage war
ٱللَّهَ
(against) Allah
وَرَسُولَهُۥ
and His Messenger
وَيَسْعَوْنَ
and strive
فِى
in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
فَسَادًا
spreading corruption
أَن
(is) that
يُقَتَّلُوٓا۟
they be killed
أَوْ
or
يُصَلَّبُوٓا۟
they be crucified
أَوْ
or
تُقَطَّعَ
be cut off
أَيْدِيهِمْ
their hands
وَأَرْجُلُهُم
and their feet
مِّنْ
of
خِلَٰفٍ
opposite sides
أَوْ
or
يُنفَوْا۟
they be exiled
مِنَ
from
ٱلْأَرْضِۚ
the land
ذَٰلِكَ
That
لَهُمْ
(is) for them
خِزْىٌ
disgrace
فِى
in
ٱلدُّنْيَاۖ
the world
وَلَهُمْ
and for them
فِى
in
ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ
the Hereafter
عَذَابٌ
(is) a punishment
عَظِيمٌ
great

Innamaa jazaaa'ul lazeena yuhaariboonal laaha wa Rasoolahoo wa yas'awna fil ardi fasaadan ai yuqattalooo aw yusallabooo aw tuqatta'a aideehim wa arjuluhum min khilaafin aw yunfaw minalard; zaalika lahum khizyun fid dunyaa wa lahum fil Aakhirati 'azaabun 'azeem

Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,

Tafsir

إِلَّا
Except
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
تَابُوا۟
repent
مِن
from
قَبْلِ
before
أَن
that
تَقْدِرُوا۟
you overpower
عَلَيْهِمْۖ
[over] them
فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟
then know
أَنَّ
that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
غَفُورٌ
(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful

Illal lazeena taaboo min qabli an taqdiroo 'alaihim fa'lamooo annnal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

Except for those who return [repenting] before you overcome [i.e., apprehend] them. And know that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Tafsir

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا
O you
ٱلَّذِينَ
who
ءَامَنُوا۟
believe!
ٱتَّقُوا۟
Fear
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
وَٱبْتَغُوٓا۟
and seek
إِلَيْهِ
towards Him
ٱلْوَسِيلَةَ
the means
وَجَٰهِدُوا۟
and strive hard
فِى
in
سَبِيلِهِۦ
His way
لَعَلَّكُمْ
so that you may
تُفْلِحُونَ
succeed

yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanut taqul laaha wabtaghooo ilaihil waseelata wa jaahidoo fee sabeelihee la'allakum tuflihoon

O you who have believed, fear Allah and seek the means [of nearness] to Him and strive in His cause that you may succeed.

Tafsir

إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
كَفَرُوا۟
disbelieve
لَوْ
if
أَنَّ
that
لَهُم
for them
مَّا
(is) what
فِى
(is) in
ٱلْأَرْضِ
the earth
جَمِيعًا
all
وَمِثْلَهُۥ
and the like of it
مَعَهُۥ
with it
لِيَفْتَدُوا۟
to ransom themselves
بِهِۦ
with it
مِنْ
from
عَذَابِ
(the) punishment
يَوْمِ
(of the) Day
ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ
(of) the Resurrection
مَا
not
تُقُبِّلَ
will be accepted
مِنْهُمْۖ
from them
وَلَهُمْ
and for them
عَذَابٌ
(is) a punishment
أَلِيمٌ
painful

Innal lazeena kafaroo law anna lahum maa fil ardi jamee'anw wa mislahoo ma'ahoo liyaftadoo bihee min 'azaabi Yawmil Qiyaamati maa tuqubbila minhum wa lahum azaabun aleem

Indeed, those who disbelieve – if they should have all that is in the earth and the like of it with it by which to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it will not be accepted from them, and for them is a painful punishment.

Tafsir

يُرِيدُونَ
They will wish
أَن
that
يَخْرُجُوا۟
they come out
مِنَ
of
ٱلنَّارِ
the Fire
وَمَا
but not
هُم
they
بِخَٰرِجِينَ
will come out
مِنْهَاۖ
of it
وَلَهُمْ
And for them
عَذَابٌ
(is) a punishment
مُّقِيمٌ
lasting

Yureedoona ai yakhrujoo minan Naari wa maa hum bikhaari jeena minhaa wa lahum 'azaabum muqeem

They will wish to get out of the Fire, but never are they to emerge therefrom, and for them is an enduring punishment.

Tafsir

وَٱلسَّارِقُ
And (for) the male thief
وَٱلسَّارِقَةُ
and the female thief -
فَٱقْطَعُوٓا۟
[then] cut off
أَيْدِيَهُمَا
their hands
جَزَآءًۢ
(as) a recompense
بِمَا
for what
كَسَبَا
they earned
نَكَٰلًا
(as) an exemplary (punishment)
مِّنَ
from
ٱللَّهِۗ
Allah
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
عَزِيزٌ
(is) All-Mighty
حَكِيمٌ
All-Wise

Wassaariqu qassaariqatu faqta'oo aidiyahumma jazaaa'am bimaa kasabaa nakaalam minal laah; wallaahu 'Azeezun hakeem

[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they earned [i.e., committed] as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Tafsir

فَمَن
But whoever
تَابَ
repented
مِنۢ
from
بَعْدِ
after
ظُلْمِهِۦ
his wrongdoing
وَأَصْلَحَ
and reforms
فَإِنَّ
then indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
يَتُوبُ
will turn in forgiveness
عَلَيْهِۗ
to him
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
غَفُورٌ
(is) Oft-Forgiving
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful

Faman taaba mim ba'di zulmihee wa aslaha fa innal laaha yatoobu 'alaih; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, indeed, Allah will turn to him in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Tafsir

أَلَمْ
Do not
تَعْلَمْ
you know
أَنَّ
that
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
لَهُۥ
to Him (belongs)
مُلْكُ
the dominion
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
(of) the heavens
وَٱلْأَرْضِ
and the earth?
يُعَذِّبُ
He punishes
مَن
whom
يَشَآءُ
He wills
وَيَغْفِرُ
and He forgives
لِمَن
[to] whom
يَشَآءُۗ
He wills
وَٱللَّهُ
And Allah
عَلَىٰ
(is) on
كُلِّ
every
شَىْءٍ
thing
قَدِيرٌ
All-Powerful

Alam ta'lam annal laaha lahoo mulkus samaawaati wal ardi yu'az zibu many-yashaa'u wa yaghfiru limany-yashaaa'; wallaahu 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadeer

Do you not know that to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills, and Allah is over all things competent.
