An-Nur Verse 34 | 24:34

وَلَقَدْ اَنْزَلْنَآ اِلَيْكُمْ اٰيٰتٍ مُّبَيِّنٰتٍ وَّمَثَلًا مِّنَ الَّذِيْنَ خَلَوْا مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِيْنَ ࣖ ( النور: ٣٤ )

walaqad

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

anzalnā

أَنزَلْنَآ

We have sent down

ilaykum

إِلَيْكُمْ

to you

āyātin

ءَايَٰتٍ

Verses

mubayyinātin

مُّبَيِّنَٰتٍ

clear

wamathalan

وَمَثَلًا

and an example

mina

مِّنَ

alladhīna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

khalaw

خَلَوْا۟

passed away

min

مِن

before you

qablikum

قَبْلِكُمْ

before you

wamawʿiẓatan

وَمَوْعِظَةً

and an admonition

lil'muttaqīna

لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

for those who fear (Allah)

Wa laqad anzalnaaa ilaikum Aayaatim mubaiyinaatinw wa masalam minnal lazeena khalaw min qablikum wa maw'izatal lilmuttaqeen (an-Nūr 24:34)

Sahih International:

And We have certainly sent down to you distinct verses and examples from those who passed on before you and an admonition for those who fear Allah. (An-Nur [24] : 34)

And let those who cannot find a match keep chaste until Allah gives them means from His grace. And if any of your slaves asks for a Deed in writing (an agreement to purchase their freedom), write it for them if you know any good in them; yea, give them something yourselves from out of the wealth Allah has given you. But force not your slave girls to prostitution when they desire chastity, in order to make a gain in goods of this world. But if any one compels them, then, after they are compelled, verily, Allah will be to them (the slave girls) Forgiving, Merciful.

And let those who cannot find a match keep chaste, until Allah makes them free from want out of His grace. And those of your slaves who ask for a writing (of freedom), give them the writing, if you know any good in them, and give them of the wealth of Allah which He has given you. And compel not your slave-girls to prostitution when they desire to keep chaste, in order to seek the frail goods of this world’s life. And whoever compels them, then surely after their compulsion Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

And verily We have revealed to you clear verses (read mubayyant or mubayyint), in this sra, [verses] in which [if read mubayyant] what is mentioned is [already] clear, or which [if read mubayyint] are clarificatory of [that which is mentioned], and an example, a curious tale, namely, that of `'isha, of those who passed away before you, that is to say, of their kind of example, that is, [an example] of their curious tales, such as the tales of Joseph and Mary, and an admonition for those who fear God, in what He, exalted be He, has said; And do not let any pity for them overcome you in God's religion [verse 2, above]; and, Why, when you [first] heard about it, did the believing men [and women] not think [good of themselves]... to the end [of verse 12, above]; and, And why, when you heard it, did you not say ... to the end [of verse 16, above]; and, God admonishes you lest you should ever repeat [the like of it] ... to the end [of verse 17, above]. This [admonition] is specifically for `those who fear God' because they are the ones to benefit from such [an admonition].

27 Tafseer Ibn Kathir

وَلَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَا إِلَيْكُمْ ايَاتٍ مُّبَيِّنَاتٍ

And indeed We have sent down for you Ayat that make things plain,

meaning, in the Qur'an there are Ayat which are clear and explain matters in detail.

وَمَثَلً مِّنَ الَّذِينَ خَلَوْا مِن قَبْلِكُمْ

and the example of those who passed away before you,

means, reports about the nations of the past and what happened to them when they went against the commandments of Allah, as Allah says;

فَجَعَلْنَـهُمْ سَلَفاً وَمَثَلً لِّلٌّخِرِينَ

And We made them a precedent, and an example to later generations. (43;56)

We made them a lesson, i.e., a rebuke for committing sin and forbidden deeds.

وَمَوْعِظَةً

and an admonition,

لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

for those who have Taqwa.

meaning, for those who remember and fear Allah.
