Al-Baqarah Verse 128

Our Lord! Make us both ˹fully˺ submit to You[[ lit., make both of us Muslims. The word “Muslim” means “one who submits to Allah.” All of the prophets submitted to Allah and were, therefore, Muslims.]] and from our descendants a nation that will submit to you. Show us our rituals, and turn to us in grace. You are truly the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.

Our Lord, make us both submitted to You and from our descendants a nation submitted to You; and show us our rituals and accept our repentance. You are the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.

and, our Lord, make us submissive to Thee, and of our seed a nation submissive to Thee; and show us our holy rites, and turn towards us; surely Thou turnest, and art All-compassionate;

Our Lord, make us devoted to You; make our descendants into a community devoted to You. Show us how to worship and accept our repentance, for You are the Ever Relenting, the Most Merciful.

Our Lord! make us twain submissive unto Thee, and of our progeny community submissive unto Thee, and show us our rites, and relent toward us! verily Thou! Thou art the Relentant, the Merciful!

"Our Lord! make of us Muslims, bowing to Thy (Will), and of our progeny a people Muslim, bowing to Thy (will); and show us our place for the celebration of (due) rites; and turn unto us (in Mercy); for Thou art the Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.

Lord, make us Your Muslims (submissive servants) and also raise from our offspring a community which should be Muslim (submissive to Your Will). Show us the ways of Your worship and forbear our shortcomings: You are Forgiving and Merciful.

And make us submit, O Lord, to Your will, and our progeny a people submissive to You. Teach us the way of worship and forgive our trespasses, for You are compassionate and merciful;

“Our Lord! And make us submissive towards you and from our offspring a nation obedient to You – and show us the ways of our worship, and incline towards us with Your mercy; indeed You only are the Most Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful.”

‘Our Lord, make us submissive to You, and [raise] from our progeny a nation submissive to You, and show us our rites [of worship], and turn to us clemently. Indeed You are the All-clement, the All-merciful.’

"Our Lord! Make us Muslims, submissive to You, and of our offspring a community Muslim, submissive to You. Show us our rites of worship (including particularly the rites of the Pilgrimage) and accept our repentance (for our inability to worship You as worshipping You requires). Surely You are the One Who accepts repentance and returns it with liberal forgiveness and additional reward, the All-Compassionate.

`Our Lord! make us both submissive servants to You (alone), and (raise) from our progeny a community (preaching virtue and) submissive to You, and show us our ways of worship and turn to us with mercy, for only You are the Oft-Returning (with compassion), the Ever Merciful.

Our Lord and make us two Moslems to you, and from our descendants, a nation submitting/surrendering/Moslems to you, and show us our rituals/methods of worship and forgive on us, that you are the forgiver, the most merciful.

"Our Lord! And make us submissive towards you and from our offspring a nation obedient to You - and show us the ways of our worship, and incline towards us with Your mercy; indeed You only are the Most Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful."

Lord! Make us Muslims (submissive) unto Thee, and of our seed also a nation of Muslims (resigned), bowing to Thy will, and show us our rites, and turn towards us, verily, Thou art the Oft-Relenting, the Most Merciful.

"Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik (all the ceremonies of pilgrimage - Hajj and 'Umrah, etc.), and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

Our Lord, and make us both submissive to Thee, and show us our ways of devotion and turn to us (mercifully); surely Thou art the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.

Our Lord! and make us both submissive to Thee and (raise) from our offspring a nation submitting to Thee, and show us our ways of devotion and turn to us (mercifully), surely Thou art the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.

Our Lord! And make us submissive unto Thee and of our seed a nation submissive unto Thee, and show us our ways of worship, and relent toward us. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Relenting, the Merciful.

Lord, make us good Muslims (one who submits himself to God) and from our descendants make a good Muslim nation. Teach us the rules of worship and accept our repentance; You are All-forgiving and All-merciful.

Our Lord, make us both submissive to You, and of our descendants a submissive nation to You. Show us our rites and accept us; You are the Receiver of Repentance, the Merciful.

"Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik, and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

Lord, make us submissive to You; make of our descendants a nation that will submit to You. Teach us our rites of worship and turn to us with mercy; You are the Forgiving One and the Merciful.

Our Lord, and make us submissive to You, and from our descendants a community submissive to You. And show us our rites, and accept our repentance. You are the Acceptor of Repentance, the Merciful.

Our Lord! And make us submissive, compliant, to You and, make, of our seed, our progeny, a community, a people, submissive to You (min [in the phrase min dhurriyyatin, `of our seed'] here is partitive, and is used here in accordance with God's above-mentioned saying My covenant shall not reach the evildoers); and show us, teach us, our holy rites, our ceremonies for worship or for the pilgrimage, and relent to us. Surely You are the Relenting, the Merciful; they asked Him to turn towards them, despite their [moral] impeccability, out of humbleness and in order to teach their progeny.

Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You and of our offspring a nation submissive unto You, and show us our Manasik, and accept our repentance. Truly, You are the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.

Ibn Jarir said,

"They meant by their supplication, `Make us submit to Your command and obedience and not associate anyone with You in obedience or worship."

Also, Ikrimah commented on the Ayah,
رَبَّنَا وَاجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ
(Our Lord! And make us submissive unto You),

"Allah said, `I shall do that."'

وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَا أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ
(And of our offspring a nation submissive unto You),

Allah said, `I shall do that.'"

This supplication by Ibrahim and Ismail is similar to what Allah informed us of about His believing servants,

وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَاماً

And those who say;`Our Lord! Bestow on us from our wives and our offspring the comfort of our eyes, and make us leaders of the Muttaqin. (25;74)

This type of supplication is allowed, because loving to have offspring who worship Allah alone without partners is a sign of complete love of Allah. This is why when Allah said to Ibrahim,
إِنِّي جَاعِلُكَ لِلنَّاسِ إِمَامًا
(Verily, I am going to make you an Imam (a leader) for mankind (to follow you)), (2;124),

Ibrahim said,
وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِي

قَالَ لَا يَنَالُ عَهْدِي الظَّالِمِينَ
("And of my offspring (to make leaders)." (Allah) said, "My covenant (Prophethood) includes not the Zalimin (polytheists and wrongdoers)") (2;124) which is explained by,
وَاجْنُبْنِي وَبَنِيَّ أَن نَّعْبُدَ الَاصْنَامَ
(And keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols) (14;35)

Muslim narrated in his Sahih that Abu Hurayrah said that the Messenger of Allah said,

إِذَا مَاتَ ابْنُ ادَمَ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ إِلاَّ مِنْ ثَلَثٍ

صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ

أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ

أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَه

When the son of Adam dies, his deeds end except for three deeds;

an ongoing charity,

a knowledge that is being benefited from and

a righteous son who supplicates (to Allah) for him.
The Meaning of Manasik

Sa`id bin Mansur said that Attab bin Bashir informed us from Khasif, from Mujahid who said,

"The Prophet Ibrahim supplicated,
وَأَرِنَا مَنَاسِكَنَا
(and show us our Manasik), Jibril then came down, took him to the House and said, `Raise its foundations.'

Ibrahim raised the House's foundations and completed the building.

Jibril held Ibrahim's hand, led him to As-Safa and said, `This is among the rituals of Allah.'

He then took him to Al-Marwah and said, `And this is among the rituals of Allah.'

He then took him to Mina until when they reached the Aqabah, they found Iblis standing next to a tree. Jibril said, `Say Takbir (Allah is the Great) and throw (pebbles) at him.'

Ibrahim said the Takbir and threw (pebbles at) Iblis.

Iblis moved to the middle Jamrah, and when Jibril and Ibrahim passed by him, Jibril said to Ibrahim, `Say Takbir and throw at him.'

Ibrahim threw at him and said Takbir.

The devious Iblis sought to add some evil acts to the rituals of Hajj, but he was unable to succeed.

Jibril took Ibrahim's hand and led him to Al-Mash`ar Al-Haram and Arafat and said to him, `Have you Arafta (known, learned) what I showed you' thrice.

Ibrahim said, `Yes I did."'

Similar statements were reported from Abu Mijlaz and Qatadah
