تِلْكَ
This
أُمَّةٌ
(was) a community
قَدْ
(which)
خَلَتْۖ
has passed away
لَهَا
for it
مَا
what
كَسَبَتْ
it earned
وَلَكُم
and for you
مَّا
what
كَسَبْتُمْۖ
you have earned
وَلَا
And not
تُسْـَٔلُونَ
you will be asked
عَمَّا
about what
كَانُوا۟
they used to
يَعْمَلُونَ
do

Tilka ummatun qad khalat lahaa maa kasabat wa lakum maa kasabtum wa laa tus'aloona 'ammaa kaano ya'maloo

That is a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.

Tafsir

سَيَقُولُ
Will say
ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ
the foolish ones
مِنَ
from
ٱلنَّاسِ
the people
مَا
"What
وَلَّىٰهُمْ
(has) turned them

from
قِبْلَتِهِمُ
their direction of prayer
ٱلَّتِى
which
كَانُوا۟
they were used to
عَلَيْهَاۚ
[on it]"
قُل
Say
لِّلَّهِ
"For Allah
ٱلْمَشْرِقُ
(is) the east
وَٱلْمَغْرِبُۚ
and the west
يَهْدِى
He guides
مَن
whom
يَشَآءُ
He wills
إِلَىٰ
to
صِرَٰطٍ
a path
مُّسْتَقِيمٍ
straight"

Sayaqoolus sufahaaa'u minan naasi maa wallaahum 'an Qiblatihimul latee kaanoo 'alaihaa; qulo lillaahil mashriqu walmaghrib; yahdee mai yashaaa'u ilaa Siraatim Mustaqeem

The foolish among the people will say, "What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they used to face?" Say, "To Allah belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."

Tafsir

وَكَذَٰلِكَ
And thus
جَعَلْنَٰكُمْ
We made you
أُمَّةً
a community
وَسَطًا
(of the) middle way
لِّتَكُونُوا۟
so that you will be
شُهَدَآءَ
witnesses
عَلَى
over
ٱلنَّاسِ
the mankind
وَيَكُونَ
and will be
ٱلرَّسُولُ
the Messenger
عَلَيْكُمْ
on you
شَهِيدًاۗ
a witness
وَمَا
And not
جَعَلْنَا
We made
ٱلْقِبْلَةَ
the direction of prayer
ٱلَّتِى
which
كُنتَ
you were used to
عَلَيْهَآ
[on it]
إِلَّا
except
لِنَعْلَمَ
that We make evident
مَن
(he) who
يَتَّبِعُ
follows
ٱلرَّسُولَ
the Messenger
مِمَّن
from (he) who
يَنقَلِبُ
turns back
عَلَىٰ
on
عَقِبَيْهِۚ
his heels
وَإِن
And indeed
كَانَتْ
it was
لَكَبِيرَةً
certainly a great (test)
إِلَّا
except
عَلَى
for
ٱلَّذِينَ
those whom
هَدَى
guided
ٱللَّهُۗ
(by) Allah
وَمَا
And not
كَانَ
will
ٱللَّهُ
Allah
لِيُضِيعَ
let go waste
إِيمَٰنَكُمْۚ
your faith
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
بِٱلنَّاسِ
(is) to [the] mankind
لَرَءُوفٌ
Full of Kindness
رَّحِيمٌ
Most Merciful

Wa kazaalika ja'alnaakum ummatanw wasatal litakoonoo shuhadaaa'a 'alan naasi wa yakoonar Rasoolu 'alaikum shaheedaa; wa maa ja'alnal qiblatal latee kunta 'alaihaaa illaa lina'lama mai yattabi'ur Rasoola mimmai yanqalibu 'alaa 'aqibayh; wa in kaanat lakabeeratan illaa 'alal lazeena hadal laah; wa maa kaanal laahu liyudee'a eemaanakum; innal laaha binnaasi la Ra'oofur Raheem

And thus We have made you a median [i.e., just] community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith [i.e., your previous prayers]. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.

Tafsir

قَدْ
Indeed
نَرَىٰ
We see
تَقَلُّبَ
(the) turning
وَجْهِكَ
(of) your face
فِى
towards
ٱلسَّمَآءِۖ
the heaven
فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ
So We will surely turn you
قِبْلَةً
(to the) direction of prayer
تَرْضَىٰهَاۚ
you will be pleased with
فَوَلِّ
So turn
وَجْهَكَ
your face
شَطْرَ
towards the direction
ٱلْمَسْجِدِ
(of) Al-Masjid
ٱلْحَرَامِۚ
Al-Haraam
وَحَيْثُ
and wherever
مَا
that
كُنتُمْ
you are
فَوَلُّوا۟
[so] turn
وُجُوهَكُمْ
your faces
شَطْرَهُۥۗ
(in) its direction
وَإِنَّ
And indeed
ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
أُوتُوا۟
were given
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
لَيَعْلَمُونَ
surely know
أَنَّهُ
that it
ٱلْحَقُّ
(is) the truth
مِن
from
رَّبِّهِمْۗ
their Lord
وَمَا
And not
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
بِغَٰفِلٍ
unaware
عَمَّا
of what
يَعْمَلُونَ
they do

Qad naraa taqalluba wajhika fis samaaa'i fala nuwalliyannaka qiblatan tardaahaa; fawalli wajhaka shatral Masjidil haaraam; wa haisu maa kuntum fawalloo wujoohakum shatrah; wa innal lazeena ootul Kitaaba laya'lamoona annahul haqqu mir Rabbihim; wa mal laahu bighaafilin 'ammaa ya'maloon

We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face [i.e., yourself] toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces [i.e., yourselves] toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture [i.e., the Jews and the Christians] well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.

Tafsir

وَلَئِنْ
And even if
أَتَيْتَ
you come
ٱلَّذِينَ
(to) those who
أُوتُوا۟
were given
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
بِكُلِّ
with all
ءَايَةٍ
(the) signs
مَّا
not
تَبِعُوا۟
they would follow
قِبْلَتَكَۚ
your direction of prayer
وَمَآ
and not
أَنتَ
(will) you (be)
بِتَابِعٍ
a follower
قِبْلَتَهُمْۚ
(of) their direction of prayer
وَمَا
And not
بَعْضُهُم
some of them
بِتَابِعٍ
(are) followers
قِبْلَةَ
(of the) direction of prayer
بَعْضٍۚ
(of each) other
وَلَئِنِ
And if
ٱتَّبَعْتَ
you followed
أَهْوَآءَهُم
their desires
مِّنۢ
from
بَعْدِ
after
مَا
[what]
جَآءَكَ
came to you
مِنَ
of
ٱلْعِلْمِۙ
the knowledge
إِنَّكَ
indeed, you
إِذًا
(would) then
لَّمِنَ
(be) surely among
ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
the wrongdoers

Wa la'in ataital lazeena ootul kitaaba bikulli aayatim maa tabi'oo Qiblatak; wa maaa anta bitaabi'in Qiblatahum; wa maa ba'duhum bitaabi''in Qiblata ba'd; wa la'init taba'ta ahwaaa;ahum mim ba'di maa jaaa'aka minal 'ilmi innaka izal laminaz zaalimeen

And if you brought to those who were given the Scripture every sign, they would not follow your qiblah. Nor will you be a follower of their qiblah. Nor would they be followers of one another's qiblah. So if you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, indeed, you would then be among the wrongdoers.

Tafsir

ٱلَّذِينَ
(To) those whom
ءَاتَيْنَٰهُمُ
We gave [them]
ٱلْكِتَٰبَ
the Book
يَعْرِفُونَهُۥ
they recognize it
كَمَا
like
يَعْرِفُونَ
they recognize
أَبْنَآءَهُمْۖ
their sons
وَإِنَّ
And indeed
فَرِيقًا
a group
مِّنْهُمْ
of them
لَيَكْتُمُونَ
surely they conceal
ٱلْحَقَّ
the Truth
وَهُمْ
while they
يَعْلَمُونَ
know

Allazeena aatainaahumul kitaaba ya'rifoonahoo kamaa ya'rifoona abnaaa'ahum wa inna fareeqam minhum layaktumoonal haqqa wa hum ya'lamoon

Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him [i.e., Prophet Muhammad (^)] as they know their own sons. But indeed, a party of them conceal the truth while they know [it].

Tafsir

ٱلْحَقُّ
The Truth
مِن

رَّبِّكَۖ
your Lord
فَلَا
so (do) not
تَكُونَنَّ
be
مِنَ
among
ٱلْمُمْتَرِينَ
the doubters

Alhaqqu mir Rabbika falaa takoonana minal mumtareen

The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.

Tafsir

وَلِكُلٍّ
And for everyone
وِجْهَةٌ
(is) a direction
هُوَ
he
مُوَلِّيهَاۖ
turns towards it
فَٱسْتَبِقُوا۟
so race
ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِۚ
(to) the good
أَيْنَ
Wherever

you will be
يَأْتِ
will bring
بِكُمُ
you
ٱللَّهُ

جَمِيعًاۚ
together
إِنَّ
Indeed
ٱللَّهَ
Allah
عَلَىٰ
(is) on
كُلِّ
every
شَىْءٍ
thing
قَدِيرٌ
All-Powerful

Wa likullinw wijhatun huwa muwalleehaa fastabiqul khairaat; ayna maa takoonoo yaati bikumullaahu jamee'aa; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in qadeer

For each [religious following] is a [prayer] direction toward which it faces. So race to [all that is] good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth [for judgement] all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.

Tafsir

وَمِنْ
And from
حَيْثُ
wherever
خَرَجْتَ
you start forth
فَوَلِّ
[so] turn
وَجْهَكَ
your face
شَطْرَ
(in the) direction
ٱلْمَسْجِدِ
(of) Al-Masjid
ٱلْحَرَامِۖ
Al-Haraam
وَإِنَّهُۥ
And indeed, it
لَلْحَقُّ
(is) surely the truth
مِن

رَّبِّكَۗ
your Lord
وَمَا
And not
ٱللَّهُ
(is) Allah
بِغَٰفِلٍ

عَمَّا
of what
تَعْمَلُونَ
you do

Wa min haisu kharajta fawalli wajhaka shatral Masjidil Haraami wa innahoo lalhaqqu mir Rabbik; wa mallaahu bighaafilin 'ammaa ta'maloon

So from wherever you go out [for prayer, O Muhammad], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram, and indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.

Tafsir

وَمِنْ
And from

لِئَلَّا
so that not
يَكُونَ
will be

ٱلَّذِينَ
those who
ظَلَمُوا۟
wronged
مِنْهُمْ
among them
فَلَا
so (do) not
تَخْشَوْهُمْ
fear them
وَٱخْشَوْنِى
but fear Me
وَلِأُتِمَّ
And that I complete
نِعْمَتِى
My favor
عَلَيْكُمْ
upon you
وَلَعَلَّكُمْ
[and] so that you may

And from wherever you go out [for prayer], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] may be, turn your faces toward it in order that the people will not have any argument against you, except for those of them who commit wrong; so fear them not but fear Me. And [it is] so I may complete My favor upon you and that you may be guided,
