Al-Isra Verse 69 | 17:69

اَمْ اَمِنْتُمْ اَنْ يُّعِيْدَكُمْ فِيْهِ تَارَةً اُخْرٰى فَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ قَاصِفًا مِّنَ الرِّيْحِ فَيُغْرِقَكُمْ بِمَا كَفَرْتُمْۙ ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُوْا لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا بِهٖ تَبِيْعًا ( الإسراء: ٦٩ )

أَمْ

amintum

أَمِنتُمْ

do you feel secure

أَن

that (not)

yuʿīdakum

يُعِيدَكُمْ

He will send you back

fīhi

فِيهِ

into it

tāratan

تَارَةً

another time

ukh'rā

أُخْرَىٰ

another time

fayur'sila

فَيُرْسِلَ

and send

ʿalaykum

عَلَيْكُمْ

upon you

qāṣifan

قَاصِفًا

a hurricane

mina

مِّنَ

l-rīḥi

ٱلرِّيحِ

the wind

fayugh'riqakum

فَيُغْرِقَكُم

and drown you

bimā

بِمَا

because

kafartum

كَفَرْتُمْۙ

you disbelieved?

thumma

ثُمَّ

Then

lā

لَا

not

tajidū

تَجِدُوا۟

you will find

lakum

لَكُمْ

for you

ʿalaynā

عَلَيْنَا

against Us

bihi

بِهِۦ

therein

tabīʿan

تَبِيعًا

an avenger?

Am amintum any yu'eedakum feehi taaratan ukhraa fa yursila 'alaikum qaasifam minar reehi fa yugh riqakum bimaa kafartum summa laa tajidoo lakum 'alainaa bihee tabee'aa (al-ʾIsrāʾ 17:69)

Sahih International:

Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into it [i.e., the sea] another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied? Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger. (Al-Isra [17] : 69)

Or do you feel secure that He will not return you to it, that is, [to] the sea, a second time and unleash upon you a shattering gale, that is, a violent wind that shatters everything in its path, to destroy your ship, and drown you for your ungratefulness? And then you will not find for yourselves any redresser of this against Us, [any] helper or advocate to demand restitution from Us for what We [will] have done to you.

27 Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Perhaps He will send You back to the Sea

Allah says,

أَمْ أَمِنتُمْ

Or do you feel secure,

`you who turn away from Us after acknowledging Our Oneness at sea once you are back upon dry land,'

أَن يُعِيدَكُمْ فِيهِ تَارَةً أُخْرَى

that He will not send you back a second time to sea

فَيُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ قَاصِفا مِّنَ الرِّيحِ

and send against you a Qasif,

which will destroy your masts and sink your vessels.

Ibn Abbas and others said,

"Al-Qasifis the wind of the sea which destroys vessels and sinks them."

فَيُغْرِقَكُم بِمَا كَفَرْتُمْ

and drown you because of your disbelief,

means because of your rejection and turning away from Allah.

ثُمَّ لَا تَجِدُواْ لَكُمْ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ تَبِيعًا

Then you will not find any avenger therein against Us.

Ibn Abbas said that this means a helper.

Mujahid said,

"A helper who will avenge you,"

i.e., take revenge on your behalf.

Qatadah said it means,

"We are not afraid that anyone will pursue Us with anything of that nature (i.e., vengeance).
