Al-Hijr Verse 2

˹The day will come when˺ the disbelievers will certainly wish they had submitted ˹to Allah˺.[[ lit., had been Muslims. ]]

There will come a time that the disbelievers will wish that they were Muslims.

Perchance the unbelievers will wish that they had surrendered:

The disbelievers may well come to wish they had submitted to God,

Oft times would those who disbelieve fain that they had been Muslims.

Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed (to Allah's will) in Islam.

Soon will the time come when the unbelievers will wish they were Muslims.

The unbelievers would haply like to wish that they had submitted (and become Muslim).

The disbelievers will ardently wish that if only they had been Muslims! (At the time of death / in their graves / on the Day of Resurrection.)

Much will the faithless wish that they had been Muslims.

Again and again will those who disbelieve wish that they had been Muslims.

Often those who disbelieve (in the verses of this perfect Book) would wish they had been Muslims.

Maybe those who disbelieved wish/love if they were Moslems/submitters/surrenderers.

The disbelievers will ardently wish that if only they had been Muslims! ( At the time of death / in their graves / on the Day of Resurrection.)

Many a time will those who disbelieve wish they had surrendered (obeyed or been Muslims).

Perhaps (often) will those who disbelieve wish that they were Muslims [those who have submitted themselves to Allah's Will in Islam Islamic Monotheism, this will be on the Day of Resurrection when they will see the disbelievers going to Hell and the Muslims going to Paradise].

I, Allah, am the Seer. These are the verses of the Book and (of) a Qur’an that makes manifest.

Often will those who disbelieve wish that they had been Muslims.

It may be that those who disbelieve wish ardently that they were Muslims.

How strongly the unbelievers will wish that they had been Muslims.

It could be that those who disbelieve will wish that they were Muslims.

How much would those who disbelieved wish that they had been Muslims.

A time will surely come when those who are bent on denying the truth will wish that they had surrendered themselves to God,

Perhaps those who disbelieve would like to become Muslims.

It may be that (read rubbam or rubam) those who disbelieve, on the Day of Resurrection, when they witness their predicament and that of the Muslims, will wish that they had been muslims (rubba here is used to indicate `many', since many of them will wish this; but it is also said to indicate `few', since they will be so stupefied by the terrors that they will not come out of their stupor to wish such a thing, except on a few occasions;

رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ


How much would those who disbelieved wish,

Here Allah tells us that they will regret having lived in disbelief, and will wish that they had been Muslims in this world.

رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَوْ كَانُواْ مُسْلِمِينَ



How much would those who disbelieved wish that they had been Muslims.

Sufyan Ath-Thawri reported from Salamah bin Kuhayl, who reported from Abi Az-Za`ra', from Abdullah, who said;

"This is about the Jahannamiyyun (the sinners among the believers who will stay in Hell for some time), when they (the disbelievers) see them being brought out of Hell."

Ibn Jarir reported that Ibn Abbas and Anas bin Malik explained that;

this Ayah refers to the Day when Allah will detain the sinful Muslims in Hell along with the idolators.

He said;

"The idolators will say to them, `What you used to worship on earth has not helped you.'

Then by virtue of His mercy, Allah will be angry for their sake, and He will remove them (from it). That is when
رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَوْ كَانُواْ مُسْلِمِينَ
(How much would those who disbelieved wish that they had been Muslims)."
