Hud Verse 29 | 11:29

وَيٰقَوْمِ لَآ اَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مَالًاۗ اِنْ اَجْرِيَ اِلَّا عَلَى اللّٰهِ وَمَآ اَنَا۠ بِطَارِدِ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْاۗ اِنَّهُمْ مُّلٰقُوْا رَبِّهِمْ وَلٰكِنِّيْٓ اَرٰىكُمْ قَوْمًا تَجْهَلُوْنَ ( هود: ٢٩ )

wayāqawmi

وَيَٰقَوْمِ

And O my people!

lā

لَآ

not

asalukum

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask (of) you

ʿalayhi

عَلَيْهِ

for it

mālan

مَالًاۖ

any wealth

إِنْ

Not

ajriya

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my reward

illā

إِلَّا

except

ʿalā

عَلَى

from

l-lahi

ٱللَّهِۚ

Allah

wamā

وَمَآ

And not

anā

أَنَا۠

I am

biṭāridi

بِطَارِدِ

going to drive away

alladhīna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

āmanū

ءَامَنُوٓا۟ۚ

believed

innahum

إِنَّهُم

Indeed they

mulāqū

مُّلَٰقُوا۟

(will) be meeting

rabbihim

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

walākinnī

وَلَٰكِنِّىٓ

but I

arākum

أَرَىٰكُمْ

see you

qawman

قَوْمًا

(are) a people

tajhalūna

تَجْهَلُونَ

ignorant

Wa yaa qawmi laaa as'alukum 'alaihi maalan in ajriya illaa 'alal laah; wa maaa ana bitaaridil lazeena aamanoo; innahum mulaaqoo Rabbihim wa laakinneee araakum qawman tajhaloon (Hūd 11:29)

Sahih International:

And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allah. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly. (Hud [11] : 29)

And, O my people, I do not demand from you any wealth for it. My reward is with none but Allah. And I am not the one who could drive the believers away. Surely, they will be meeting their Lord (gracefully), but I do see your behavior is that of ignorance.

And O my people, I do not ask of you any wealth, which you should give me, for this, for conveying the Message. My wage, my reward, falls only upon God and I will not drive away those who believe, as you have commanded me; they shall surely meet their Lord, at the Resurrection, and He will requite them and exact vengeance for them from those who wronged them and drove them away. But I see you are a people who are ignorant, of the consequence of your affair.

27 Tafseer Ibn Kathir

Allah tells;

وَيَا قَوْمِ لا أَسْأَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مَالاً إِنْ أَجْرِيَ إِلاَّ عَلَى اللّهِ

And O my people! I ask of you no wealth for it, my reward is from none but Allah.

Nuh says to his people, "I do not ask you for any wealth in return for my sincere advice to you."

Wealth (Mal) here means, "payment that I take from you."

Nuh means, "I am only seeking the reward from Allah, the Mighty and Sublime."

Concerning the statement,

وَمَأ أَنَاْ بِطَارِدِ الَّذِينَ امَنُواْ

I am not going to drive away those who have believed.

This alludes to the fact that they (the disbelievers) requested Nuh to disassociate himself from the believers, because they were averse to them and felt themselves too important to sit with them.

This is similar to the request of disbelievers to the seal of the Messengers to disassociate himself from a group of the people who were considered weak in their social status. They wanted the Prophet to sit with them in a special gathering of the elite.

Therefore, Allah revealed,

وَلَا تَطْرُدِ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَدَاةِ وَالْعَشِىِّ

And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon. (6;52)

Allah also says,

وَكَذلِكَ فَتَنَّا بَعْضَهُمْ بِبَعْضٍ لِّيَقُولواْ أَهَـوُلاءِ مَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مِّن بَيْنِنَأ أَلَيْسَ اللَّهُ بِأَعْلَمَ بِالشَّـكِرِينَ

Thus We have tried some of them with others, that they might say;"Is it these (poor believers) whom Allah has favored from among us!" Does not Allah know best those who are grateful! (6;53)

And Nuh says here,

إِنَّهُم مُّلَقُو رَبِّهِمْ وَلَـكِنِّيَ أَرَاكُمْ قَوْمًا تَجْهَلُونَ

وَيَا قَوْمِ مَن يَنصُرُنِي مِنَ اللّهِ إِن طَرَدتُّهُمْ

أَفَلَ تَذَكَّرُونَ
